Combining Batches & Recipe Math

Sam made 8 chocolate chip cookies and 7 sugar cookies. He wants to put them ALL on one big plate. How many cookies will be on the plate?

8 + 7 = 15! We can count on: start at 8 and count up 7 more: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

When we COMBINE two groups, we ADD them together. The total is always bigger than either group alone.

**Think About It:** If Sam also had 3 oatmeal cookies, the new total would be 15 + 3 = 18!
