What Is Pitch?
Pitch is how high or low a sound is. It is one of the most important ideas in music!
A high-pitched sound is squeaky, light, and bright. Think of a bird chirping, a whistle blowing, or a tiny bell ringing. High sounds seem to come from up above.
A low-pitched sound is deep, heavy, and rumbly. Think of thunder booming, a big drum pounding, or a lion roaring. Low sounds seem to come from down below.
Pitch is NOT the same as loud or quiet! A sound can be high AND quiet (like a tiny bird chirping far away) or low AND loud (like thunder crashing). Pitch is about how high or low the sound is, not how loud it is.
Try this: hum a note as high as you can. Now hum a note as low as you can. Feel the difference? That is pitch!
