Your Voice Is an Instrument
Did you know that your voice is a musical instrument? It is the very first instrument that humans ever used, and everyone has one!
Your voice can make high sounds and low sounds by changing how tight or loose your vocal cords are (the tiny parts in your throat that vibrate to make sound).
Try this: say 'ooh' in a high, squeaky voice like a mouse. Now say 'ooh' in a low, deep voice like a bear. You just changed the pitch of your voice!
Now try sliding your voice from low to high, like a siren: 'oooOOOOH!' And then from high to low: 'OOOOoooh.' That sliding sound is called a glide or a glissando (another Italian music word!).
Your voice can reach many different pitches. With practice, you can learn to control exactly which pitch you sing. That is what singing lessons are all about β learning to control your vocal instrument!
