Making a Classroom Band
The best thing about classroom instruments is playing them TOGETHER! When everyone plays their instrument at the same time, keeping the same beat, you create a classroom band.
Here is how to set up a classroom band:
The rhythm section: drums and shakers keep the steady beat. They are the foundation that everyone else follows. Pat pat pat pat β steady and strong.
The sparkle section: triangles and bells add special moments. They do not play on every beat β they ding on special beats to add brightness. Maybe once every four beats: rest rest rest DING!
The melody section: xylophones play the tune of the song. They play the notes of the melody while everyone else provides the rhythm.
The most important rule in a band: LISTEN to each other! Do not just play your own part loudly and ignore everyone else. Listen for the beat. Listen for the melody. Blend your sound with the group.
The second most important rule: follow the conductor. The conductor (teacher or leader) tells everyone when to start, when to stop, when to play loud, and when to play soft. Watch the conductor's hands!
