Birds Help Gardens and Farms
Birds do so many helpful things for our world! One of the most important is pest control. Many birds eat enormous amounts of insects every day.
A single barn swallow can eat up to 850 insects per day! That includes mosquitoes, flies, and beetles that would otherwise bother people and damage crops. Without insect-eating birds, farmers would have much bigger pest problems.
Woodpeckers eat beetles and larvae that bore into trees. Without woodpeckers, these insects could kill entire forests! Woodpeckers are like tree doctors, keeping trees healthy by removing harmful insects.
Owls and hawks are nature's mouse patrol. A single barn owl family can eat over 3,000 mice, rats, and other rodents in a year. Farmers love having barn owls nearby because they keep rodent populations in check without any need for poisons.
Hummingbirds help too β but in a different way. As they drink nectar from flowers, pollen sticks to their heads and beaks. When they visit the next flower, they transfer the pollen, helping the flowers make seeds. This is called pollination, and many plants depend on it.
**Think About It:** Without birds eating insects, there would be many more mosquitoes and crop-damaging bugs. Birds are natural pest controllers!
