Layering Up
When it is cold and snowy outside, the secret to staying warm is LAYERS. Wearing multiple layers of clothing traps warm air between them, creating insulation β like wearing several thin blankets instead of one thick one.
The base layer goes right against your skin. It should be a snug, thin shirt and leggings made of moisture-wicking material (fabric that pulls sweat away from your skin). Cotton is NOT good for a base layer because when it gets wet from sweat, it stays wet and makes you cold.
The middle layer provides warmth. A fleece jacket, wool sweater, or puffy vest works great. This layer traps warm air close to your body.
The outer layer protects you from wind, snow, and rain. A waterproof, windproof winter coat is essential. Snow pants keep your legs dry if you are playing in the snow.
The beauty of layers is that you can add or remove them. If you start getting too warm while playing, you can unzip your coat or take off the middle layer. If you get cold, add the layer back on.
**Remember:** Three layers β base (wicks sweat), middle (traps warmth), outer (blocks wind and snow).
