Windy Weather
Wind is moving air! Sometimes it is a gentle breeze that feels nice on a warm day. Other times it is a strong gust that can knock you off balance!
Wind makes the air feel colder than it actually is. This is called wind chill. If the temperature is 40°F but there is a strong wind, it might feel like 30°F on your skin! That is why windy days need windproof clothing.
Windproof clothes are made of tightly woven fabric that wind cannot blow through. A thin windbreaker jacket can make a huge difference on a breezy day. Even if it is not cold, wind blowing through your clothes steals your body heat.
On windy days, wear fitted clothes that do not flap around. Loose, baggy clothes catch the wind like a sail and can slow you down or make you cold. A zipper is better than buttons because wind can blow through button gaps.
Hold onto your hat! Wind loves to steal hats. Hats with chin straps or snug-fitting beanies stay on better than loose baseball caps on windy days.
**Think About It:** Have you ever been outside when a cold wind suddenly blew? Even if the sun was shining, the wind probably made you feel chilly. That is wind chill in action!
