Scales
Scales are small, flat, overlapping pieces that cover the bodies of fish, snakes, and lizards. Fish scales are smooth and shiny β they help fish slide through the water easily. Snake scales are dry and smooth (not slimy!). Lizard scales can be bumpy or smooth. Scales protect the animal's body like tiny shields. They keep water and dirt from getting to the soft skin underneath. Scales are tough!
