What Is a Chrysalis?
The caterpillar sheds its skin one last time, and underneath is something hard and smooth β a chrysalis! A chrysalis is like a special shell. It protects the caterpillar while something incredible happens inside. Some chrysalises are green and look like leaves so birds cannot find them. Others are brown like tree bark. The chrysalis is not a cocoon! Cocoons are made of silk by moths. Butterflies make chrysalises, which form from their own skin.
