Why Do Flowers Bloom in Spring?
Flowers bloom in spring because of two things: warmer temperatures and more sunlight! During winter, many plants are dormant β they are resting, alive but not growing. Their energy is stored in roots, bulbs, or seeds underground.
When the soil warms up and the days get longer, plants sense that spring has arrived. It is like a wake-up alarm! The stored energy starts flowing. Roots begin growing. Stems push upward through the soil. And finally, beautiful flowers open up!
Some of the first flowers to bloom are called 'spring ephemeral' flowers β they bloom VERY early, even before trees get their leaves. Crocuses can push right through snow! They are the bravest little flowers.
