Being a Good Listener
One of the most important friendship skills is LISTENING. When you really listen to someone, you make them feel important and valued.
Active listening means:
EYES: Look at the person who is talking. Make eye contact (but do not stare!)
EARS: Really hear what they are saying. Do not just wait for your turn to talk.
MOUTH: Stay quiet while they talk. Do not interrupt. You will get your turn.
BODY: Face the person. Lean in a little. Nod your head to show you are following along.
HEART: Care about what they are saying. Try to understand their feelings.
After they finish, show you listened:
- 'That sounds really fun!'
- 'I am sorry that happened to you.'
- 'Tell me more about that!'
- 'How did that make you feel?'
Everyone wants to be heard. When you truly listen, you give someone a wonderful gift.
