The Homework Routine
Research shows that a consistent homework routine matters more than any specific study technique. Effective elements include: a designated workspace with minimal distractions (not in front of the TV), a regular time slot (many families find 30 minutes after a post-school snack and movement break works best), all materials organized beforehand (pencils, paper, calculator), and a clear expectation of how long homework should take. The National PTA recommends 10 minutes per grade level per night as a guideline—20 minutes for second grade, 60 minutes for sixth grade. If homework consistently takes much longer, the assignment difficulty may not match the child's level—a conversation with the teacher is warranted.
