Creating a Family Media Plan
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a family media plan rather than a one-size-fits-all screen time limit. The plan should cover: screen-free times (meals, bedtime, homework), screen-free zones (bedrooms, dining table), content standards by age, and balance with non-screen activities (physical play, reading, family time, creative play). For children 6-12, the AAP suggests consistent limits that ensure screen time does not replace sleep (children need 9-12 hours), physical activity (60 minutes daily), or face-to-face social interaction. Co-viewing and co-playing when possible allows parents to understand what their child experiences online and creates shared conversation topics.
