Supporting Friendship Development
Friendships become central to children's social development during the school years. Between ages 6-8, friendships are based primarily on proximity and shared activities ('We are friends because we both like Legos'). By ages 9-12, friendships deepen to include trust, loyalty, and emotional support. Parents support friendship development by: facilitating playdates and social opportunities, teaching social skills (how to join a group, how to resolve conflicts, how to be a good listener), and accepting that friendship drama is normal—children are learning to navigate complex social dynamics. Resist the urge to orchestrate friendships; instead, provide opportunities and coaching when your child asks for help.
