Age-Appropriate Responsibilities
Children who contribute to the household develop competence, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Ages 6-7: make their bed, set the table, feed pets, put dirty clothes in the hamper, clean up their own toys. Ages 8-9: load the dishwasher, take out trash, fold laundry, prepare simple snacks, pack their own school bag. Ages 10-12: cook simple meals, do their own laundry, mow the lawn with supervision, manage a small allowance, walk to nearby destinations independently. The key is teaching the skill, then gradually releasing responsibility. Expect imperfect results initially—a nine-year-old's folded laundry will not look like yours, and correcting their effort teaches them that trying is not worth it.
