Normal Moods vs. Clinical Concerns
Adolescent mood variability is normal—teenagers experience emotions more intensely than adults due to hormonal changes and brain development. However, persistent patterns signal clinical concern. Normal: occasional sadness that lifts within a day or two, irritability that resolves after sleep, social withdrawal for short periods. Warning signs: depressed mood or irritability lasting more than two weeks, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, significant changes in sleep (sleeping all day or insomnia), changes in appetite or weight, declining academic performance, social isolation, expressions of worthlessness or hopelessness, and giving away valued possessions. One in five adolescents experiences a diagnosable mental health disorder, and suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10-24.
