Preparing for IEP Meetings
IEP meetings can be intimidating—parents face a room of professionals who have their own jargon, processes, and institutional constraints. Preparation equalizes the dynamic. Before the meeting: review the current IEP and progress reports, write down your priorities and concerns, prepare specific examples of strengths and challenges you observe at home, draft proposed goals or modifications, and invite someone to attend with you (spouse, advocate, or friend) to take notes while you participate. Bring a written agenda of your discussion points. Send the school a parent concerns letter at least a week before the meeting—IDEA requires the team to consider your input, and a written letter becomes part of the record.
