Caregiver Stress and Burnout
Parents of children with special needs experience significantly higher rates of stress, anxiety, depression, and marital strain than parents of typically developing children. Research shows that mothers of children with autism have cortisol levels comparable to combat soldiers. Caregiver burnout manifests as emotional exhaustion, reduced sense of accomplishment, and detachment from the caregiving role. Warning signs include: feeling trapped or resentful, physical symptoms (chronic fatigue, headaches, insomnia), withdrawing from social relationships, and neglecting your own health. Acknowledging the difficulty is the first step—many parents feel guilty admitting that parenting their child is hard, but denial of the challenge prevents seeking necessary support.
