The Pause Between Stimulus and Response
Viktor Frankl observed that 'between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our freedom and our power to choose our response.' Self-regulation is the skill of widening that space. It is not suppressing emotions β research shows suppression backfires, increasing physiological stress and reducing memory. Instead, self-regulation involves acknowledging the emotion, choosing whether and how to express it, and selecting a response aligned with your values rather than your impulses. A regulated person feels anger but does not send the rage email; feels anxiety but does not avoid the difficult conversation; feels disappointment but does not withdraw from the team. The emotion is valid; the behavior is chosen.
