Gear for Wildlife
Wildlife photography typically requires long focal lengths: 200-400mm for larger animals, 500-800mm for birds and distant subjects. Fast apertures (f/2.8-f/4) enable faster shutter speeds and better background blur but come at extreme cost ($6,000-$13,000 for pro super-telephoto lenses). Budget alternatives include 100-400mm zoom lenses ($1,000-$2,500) and teleconverters (1.4× or 2× extenders that multiply focal length at the cost of 1-2 stops of light). Minimum shutter speed for handheld wildlife is 1/focal length: at 400mm, shoot at 1/500s or faster. Image stabilization buys 2-4 extra stops.
