PSAT Format and Scoring Overview
The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a standardized test administered annually in October to 10th and 11th graders. The digital adaptive PSAT consists of two sections: a Reading and Writing section (2 modules, 54 questions, 64 minutes) and a Math section (2 modules, 44 questions, 70 minutes), for a total of 98 questions and 2 hours 14 minutes of testing time. Scores range from 160-760 per section, for a total of 320-1520. The test is adaptive at the module level β performance on Module 1 determines whether Module 2 is easier or harder. National Merit Scholar recognition is based on the PSAT taken in 11th grade β qualifying scores (called the Selection Index) vary by state.
