The Parliamentary Model
Parliamentary debate, modeled after the British House of Commons, is a team format where the Government proposes a motion and the Opposition challenges it. In American Parliamentary (APDA) and British Parliamentary (BP) formats, teams of two receive the motion just 15 to 20 minutes before the round β forcing quick thinking and broad knowledge rather than prepared briefs. Points of information (POIs), where the opposing side may stand and ask a brief question during a speech, add a dynamic, interactive element absent from other formats. Parliamentary debate rewards adaptability, wit, and the ability to construct coherent arguments under time pressure.
