Purpose of Cross-Examination
Cross-examination (CX) is the period in a debate where you directly question your opponent. Its purpose is threefold: clarify ambiguous arguments so you can respond accurately, expose logical weaknesses or missing evidence, and set up arguments you plan to make in your next speech. Effective CX is not aggressive interrogation β it is strategic conversation. The best cross-examiners know exactly where their questions are leading before they ask the first one. They build a logical trap through a sequence of seemingly innocent questions that culminate in a damaging admission or contradiction.
