The Four Levels of Rebuttal
Effective rebuttal operates on four levels simultaneously. Level one attacks the evidence: is the source credible, current, and representative? Level two attacks the reasoning: does the conclusion logically follow from the evidence, or are there fallacies? Level three attacks the framing: does the opponent's framework for evaluating the issue actually make sense? Level four offers counter-evidence and alternative explanations. Weak debaters only operate at level one β quibbling over individual facts. Strong debaters weave all four levels into a coherent response that undermines the opponent's argument from every angle, leaving no avenue for recovery.
