The Moderator's Role
A great moderator is like a great orchestra conductor β they do not play an instrument themselves, but without them the performance falls apart. The moderator's job is to set the tone, ask questions that draw out each panelist's expertise, ensure balanced speaking time, manage audience questions, and keep the conversation focused and on schedule. Poor moderation leads to panels dominated by one verbose speaker while others sit silently, or conversations that wander far from the advertised topic. The audience came to hear the panelists, not the moderator β your ego stays backstage while your facilitation skills take center stage.
