Extemporaneous vs. Impromptu
Extemporaneous speaking occupies the middle ground between fully prepared speeches and impromptu delivery. In competitive extemporaneous speaking, contestants receive a current-events question and have 30 minutes to prepare a seven-minute speech using research files they have compiled. In professional settings, extemporaneous moments arise when you are asked to brief executives on your project with 15 minutes notice, or when a meeting shifts to an unexpected topic you know well. The skill combines deep subject knowledge with the ability to rapidly organize and deliver structured content. Unlike impromptu, you have some preparation time; unlike a keynote, you cannot over-rehearse.
