Meaning Beyond Words
Interpreting is not translating words—it is transferring meaning. The English phrase 'We need to think outside the box' does not literally involve a box; interpreting it into ASL requires conveying the concept of creative thinking rather than signing THINK OUTSIDE BOX. Similarly, when a Deaf person signs with intense facial expression and rapid movement to convey urgency, the interpreter must voice with corresponding vocal urgency and word choice—not in a flat, monotone voice. Message analysis means examining the source for literal meaning, implied meaning, speaker intent, and emotional content before producing the interpretation.
