Pre-Assignment Preparation
Professional interpreters prepare for every assignment. For a medical appointment, review common terminology for the patient's condition, the physician's specialty, and likely procedures. For a legal proceeding, obtain case documents, review legal terminology, and familiarize yourself with courtroom procedures. For an academic lecture, request the syllabus, review subject vocabulary in both English and ASL, and watch related content to build domain knowledge. Preparation reduces the cognitive load during the assignment, improving accuracy and reducing fatigue. Arrive 15-20 minutes early to discuss logistics, learn participant names, and identify any specialized vocabulary.
