Three Lenses on Society
Sociology uses three major theoretical perspectives, each illuminating different aspects of social life. Structural functionalism (Durkheim, Parsons) views society as a system of interconnected parts that work together to maintain stability. Conflict theory (Marx, Weber) focuses on inequality, power struggles, and how dominant groups maintain their advantage. Symbolic interactionism (Mead, Blumer) examines how individuals create meaning through everyday interactions and shared symbols. No single perspective captures the full picture β each reveals what the others miss. Sociologists choose the perspective that best fits their research question, or use multiple perspectives for a richer analysis.
