What Makes a Community Resilient?
Community resilience is the capacity to prepare for, absorb, recover from, and adapt to shocks—whether extreme weather, economic downturns, supply chain disruptions, or public health emergencies. Resilient communities share three characteristics: diversity (multiple food sources, energy sources, and economic sectors rather than dependence on one), connectivity (strong social networks where neighbors know and support each other), and redundancy (backup systems for critical needs). Research consistently shows that social capital—the strength of community relationships—is the single strongest predictor of disaster recovery speed. Communities where neighbors know each other recover twice as fast as socially isolated communities.
