Integrated Speaking Tasks 3β6: Structure and Note-Taking
TOEFL iBT Speaking includes four tasks (as of the 2019 format revision): Task 1 (Independent β personal opinion question, 45 seconds preparation, 45 seconds response), Task 2 (Campus-context reading + listening, 30 seconds preparation, 60 seconds response), Task 3 (Academic reading + lecture, 30 seconds preparation, 60 seconds response), and Task 4 (Academic lecture only, 20 seconds preparation, 60 seconds response). Tasks 2β4 are integrated tasks requiring you to synthesize reading and/or listening content. For Task 2 (campus context): the reading presents a campus policy change; the listening presents a student's opinion about it. Your response must briefly identify the policy change and then explain the student's reaction and the specific reasons given. For Task 3 (academic): the reading presents an academic concept; the lecture gives a specific example of that concept. Your response must identify the academic concept and explain how the lecture's example illustrates it. For Task 4 (lecture only): the lecture explains an academic concept or phenomenon with one or two examples. Your response must explain the concept and examples clearly. Note-taking template for integrated Speaking: three boxes β Reading Summary (concept or policy), Listening Main Idea (opinion or example), and Listening Specific Details (reasons or example components). Fill the Reading box during the reading; fill the Listening boxes during the audio.
