Reading 28β30: Zero-Error Strategies
TOEFL Reading is scored 0β30 with 30 representing perfect performance. Scoring 28β30 requires near-zero errors across three reading passages of 10 questions each. The question types causing the most errors for 24β27 scorers attempting to reach 28β30: Insert-a-Sentence questions (selecting where a new sentence logically belongs in the passage β requires understanding the logical flow between sentences, not just proximity to related content); Summary questions (selecting 3 of 6 statements that accurately reflect major ideas in the passage β the trap choices are either minor details or distortions of major claims); and Inference questions (identifying what is implied but not stated β at the 28β30 level, the correct answer is precisely calibrated to the passage's implied meaning, and the wrong answers distort by using the passage's vocabulary with changed relationships). Zero-error Reading strategy: (1) Read each passage for structure, not just content β note where the introduction ends, where each supporting argument begins, and where qualifications or counterarguments appear. This structural map guides all question-answering. (2) For Insert-a-Sentence: read the sentence to be inserted and identify its logical predecessor (what does it follow from?) and logical successor (what naturally follows it?). Find the gap in the passage where those logical neighbors are adjacent. (3) For Summary questions: eliminate choices that describe specific details mentioned briefly in the passage (these are not major ideas) and choices that distort major claims. The three correct choices each capture a major thesis-level point.
