Pipe Welding Position System
Pipe welding positions are designated by a number-letter system where G stands for groove. In 1G, the pipe rotates horizontally and the welder works from the top—the easiest position. In 2G, the pipe is vertical and the weld is horizontal around the circumference. In 5G, the pipe is fixed horizontally and the welder must work from top to bottom (or bottom to top) around the pipe without rotating it. The 6G position places the pipe at a 45-degree angle, fixed, combining the challenges of all other positions—passing a 6G qualification test qualifies the welder for all positions.
