The WPS-PQR-WPQ System
Every code-governed weld starts with a welding procedure specification (WPS)—a written document that prescribes the essential variables for producing a sound weld. The WPS is supported by a procedure qualification record (PQR), which documents the actual test weld and mechanical test results that proved the procedure produces acceptable welds. Welders are then qualified by performing a test weld following the WPS, and their performance is documented on a welder performance qualification (WPQ). This three-document system ensures traceability from the completed weld back to proven procedures and qualified personnel.
