CWI Exam Structure
The AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) exam consists of three parts taken in one day. Part A covers welding fundamentals—metallurgy, processes, symbols, NDE, and quality concepts across 150 multiple-choice questions. Part B is the practical examination where candidates inspect actual weld replicas and answer questions using gauges and measuring tools. Part C is the code book portion—an open-book exam where candidates answer questions by looking up provisions in a chosen code (typically AWS D1.1 or API 1104). Eligibility requires a combination of education and welding-related experience totaling a minimum of five years.
