Body Parts Help Animals Eat, Move, and Sense
Atlas the friendly explorer kneels in a sunny green meadow, pointing at a rabbit's long ears, big eyes, hopping legs, and small busy mouth as it nibbles on a clover leaf
- Name four animal body parts: eyes, legs, ears, and mouth.
- Match each body part to the job it helps an animal do.
- Explain that body parts help animals eat, move, and sense the world.
- Identify which body part an animal uses to eat food.
Key terms
- body part
- A piece of an animal's body that has a special job.
- sense
- To learn about the world by seeing, hearing, smelling, or feeling.
- beak
- The hard mouth part a bird uses to eat food.
- structure
- A part of the body shaped to do a certain job.
Every Part Has A Job
Animals are built from many body parts, and each part is shaped to do one main job. Eyes are shaped to gather light so an animal can see. Ears are shaped to catch sounds. Legs are strong so an animal can move, and the mouth is built to take in food. When you wonder what a body part is for, you can ask: what job does this part do? The shape usually gives you a clue.
Eat, Move, And Sense
Body parts help animals do three big jobs: eat, move, and sense the world. A rabbit eats with its mouth, moves with its strong legs, and senses with its eyes and ears. Sensing means noticing what is around you, like seeing food or hearing danger. All three jobs work together to help the animal find food, stay safe, and live in its home.
Different Animals, Same Jobs
Animals can look very different but still have body parts that do the same jobs. A bird has a beak instead of soft lips, but the beak is still a mouth part that helps it eat seeds and bugs. A fish uses fins instead of legs to move. You have body parts too: your eyes see, your ears hear, your legs move you, and your mouth eats. Different shapes, same important jobs.
Worked examples
A cat is watching a bird outside. Which body part is it using?
- Watching means looking at something to see it.
- The body part that gathers light and lets an animal see is the eyes.
- So the cat is using its eyes to watch the bird.
Answer: The cat is using its eyes.
How does a bird eat a seed without lips?
- A bird does not have soft lips like people do.
- Instead, a bird has a hard beak, which is its mouth part.
- The beak picks up the seed so the bird can eat it.
Answer: It uses its beak, which is the bird's mouth part.
Activity
Match each animal body part on the left to the job it helps the animal do on the right.
Practice
Name the body part a dog uses to hear a whistle far away.
Tell which body part helps a rabbit hop across the field.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Eyes are used for hearing soundsEyes gather light so an animal can see; ears, not eyes, are the body part that catches sounds.
- A beak is not a mouthA beak is a bird's mouth part, used to grab and eat food just like our mouths do.

Which body part helps an animal hear sounds?
A rabbit hops far across the field. Which body part helps it move?
A bird picks up a seed to eat it. Which body part does the bird use to eat?
Sam thinks eyes are for hearing. What do eyes really help an animal do?
Recap
Animals have body parts like eyes, ears, legs, and mouths, and each part has its own job. Body parts help animals eat, move, and sense the world around them, even when different animals have different shapes.
