Making It Right After You Hurt Someone
Justice the owl sits on a wooden bench in a sunny schoolyard, holding a cracked crayon in one wing and a fresh new crayon in the other, looking kindly at two children who are figuring out how to fix a problem together.
- Identify when your actions have hurt someone or broken an agreement.
- Explain why saying sorry is an important first step when you cause harm.
- Describe at least one way to make things right after causing harm.
- Compare situations where something is fixed versus not fixed.
Key terms
- Apology
- Telling someone you are sorry for what you did.
- Real sorry
- Looking at the person and showing you care how they feel.
- Making it right
- Doing something to help fix what your action broke.
- Responsibility
- Owning what you did and helping to fix it yourself.
Two Steps to Repair
Fixing a mistake takes two steps, not one. First you say a real sorry, which means looking at the person, telling them what you did, and showing you care how they feel. Second you make things right by doing something to help, like sharing your crayon, cleaning the mess, or giving back what you took. Both steps together repair the harm.
Balancing the Seesaw
When you hurt someone or break an agreement, things feel out of balance, like a seesaw tipped to one side. Saying sorry alone does not always fully lift the other side back up. But when you say sorry and also make things right, the seesaw becomes level again. Your friend feels better, you feel better, and fairness returns to the situation.
Worked examples
Mia knocked over Leo's tower of blocks. What should Mia do?
- First step: say a real sorry and show Leo she cares how he feels.
- Second step: make it right by helping Leo pick up and rebuild the blocks.
- Doing both steps balances the seesaw and takes responsibility herself.
Answer: Mia should say sorry and help Leo pick up the blocks.
