Why Rules Keep Us Safe and Fair
Justice the owl sits on a bright yellow slide at a sunny playground, holding a small sign that says WAIT YOUR TURN, while children smile and line up happily behind her.

Key terms
- Safety rule
- A rule that keeps people's bodies from getting hurt.

Rules Keep Bodies Safe
Many rules exist so that people do not get hurt. Waiting your turn on the slide stops kids from crashing into each other, wearing a helmet protects your head if you fall, and stopping at a red light keeps cars from bumping into people. When you notice a rule, ask whether it is there to keep a body safe.
Rules Make Things Fair
Other rules exist so that everyone gets a fair chance. Taking turns means one person does not always go first while others are left out, and sharing the crayons means everyone gets to draw. A fairness rule spreads chances around the whole group so no single person, even the biggest or loudest, gets everything.
Worked examples
