Everyday Life Has Changed From Long Ago to Today
Sage the wise owl sits at a wide wooden table covered with two sets of objects — on one side, an old hand-cranked washing tub, a candle, and a horse-drawn wagon; on the other side, a washing machine, a lamp, and a car — pointing a wing back and forth between the two sides with a curious smile.
- Identify at least two everyday things that were different long ago compared to today.
- Compare how people traveled long ago with how people travel today.
- Compare how people washed clothes long ago with how people wash clothes today.
- Sort objects into two groups: long ago and today.

How People Traveled
A very long time ago, before your great-great-grandparents were born, there were no cars or airplanes. To get from one town to another, people walked on foot or rode horses, and a trip could take many days. Today we have cars, buses, trains, and airplanes that carry us long distances quickly. The need to travel stayed the same, but the way we travel changed a great deal.
Doing Everyday Work
Everyday chores looked very different long ago. People washed clothes by scrubbing them by hand in big tubs of water, and they lit candles when it grew dark because there were no electric lights. They even sewed their own clothes stitch by stitch. Today, washing machines, electric lamps, and clothes made in factories do much of this work, so the same tasks take far less time and effort.
What Stayed the Same
Even though tools have changed a lot, some things have stayed exactly the same. People long ago still needed food to eat, clothes to wear, and ways to get around, just like people do now. They lived in families and cared for each other too. So when we compare long ago and today, we see that human needs stayed the same while the tools used to meet them changed.
Worked examples
Sort a horse-drawn wagon into long ago or today.
- Ask: would you see this at homes today, or only in an old storybook?
- Horse-drawn wagons are mostly seen in old pictures, not on busy streets now.
- That means it belongs to the past.
- So a horse-drawn wagon belongs in the long ago group.
Answer: A horse-drawn wagon belongs in the long ago group.
Decide what changed and what stayed the same about washing clothes.
- Long ago, people scrubbed clothes by hand in tubs.
- Today, washing machines do the scrubbing for us.
- Either way, people still need clean clothes.
- So the need stayed the same, but the tool changed.
Answer: The need for clean clothes stayed the same; the tool changed from hand-scrubbing to a washing machine.
Activity
Sort each picture into the right group — does it belong to long ago or today?
