The Four Big Needs

Every single person in the world has four big needs: food, water, a home, and clothes. We call these needs because our bodies cannot stay alive and healthy without them. Food gives us energy to grow, water keeps us from getting too thirsty, a home keeps us safe, and clothes keep us warm. Because we truly must have all four to live, they are needs, not just nice extras.

What Makes Something a Want

A want is something fun or nice that you would enjoy having, but you can still live a healthy, safe life without it. Toys, candy, balloons, and video games are all wants. There is nothing wrong with wants, and it is okay to enjoy them. The key difference is that a want makes you happy, while a need keeps you alive. Wants are extra treats on top of the things you really need.

A Simple Way to Check

When you are not sure if something is a need or a want, you can use an easy test. Ask yourself one question: would I get sick or be unsafe without this? If the answer is yes, the item is a need. If the answer is no, and you could still be healthy and safe without it, then the item is a want. This little question works for almost anything you can think of.
