Building Blocks of the Body: Cells to Systems
Atlas the friendly explorer stands beside a giant glowing model of the human body, magnifying glass in hand, zooming out from a single tiny cell all the way to tissues, organs, and whole organ systems.
- Identify the cell as the smallest living building block of the body.
- Order the four levels of body organization from smallest to largest.
- Describe how tissues join together to form an organ.
- Give one example of an organ system and the job it does.
Key terms
- cell
- the smallest living block in you
- tissue
- many cells working together as one
- organ
- different tissues doing one big job
- organ system
- organs teaming up for a bigger job
- microscope
- a tool that makes tiny things look big
Tiny Building Blocks
Your body is built from tiny blocks called cells. Cells are so small you need a microscope to see them. You have trillions of cells inside you. When many cells of the same kind work together, they make a tissue. For example, lots of muscle cells team up to make muscle tissue that helps you move and stay strong.
From Tissues to Systems
When different tissues work together to do one big job, they make an organ. Your heart is an organ, and its job is to pump blood. When organs team up for an even bigger job, they make an organ system. Your heart and blood vessels together make the circulatory system, which moves blood all around your body.
Worked examples
Put the body blocks in order from smallest to biggest.
- Start with the smallest block, the cell.
- Many cells make a tissue.
- Tissues make an organ, like the heart.
- Organs make an organ system.
Answer: Cells, then tissues, then organs, then organ systems.
Activity
Put these body building blocks in order from smallest to largest.
Practice
What is the smallest living block in your body?
What do many cells make when they work together?
Common mistakes to avoid
- The heart is one cellThe heart is an organ made of many tissues and cells.
- Organs are smaller than cellsCells are tiny, and organs are made of many cells together.
Check your understanding
What is the smallest living building block of the body?
Which list shows the correct order from smallest to largest?
Mia says the heart is just one single cell. Why is that wrong?
Recap
Your body is built from tiny cells that join into tissues, then organs, then organ systems. Smaller blocks always build the bigger ones, from the cell all the way up.

Think about how tiny cells build the whole big you!
