Organs Team Up Into Body Systems
Medi stands inside a giant, glowing model of a human body, pointing excitedly at a beating heart connected to a web of colorful blood vessels stretching in every direction, with a magnifying glass in hand.
- Explain what a body system is and why organs work together in one.
- Identify at least two organs that belong to the circulatory system.
- Compare what the heart does alone versus what it can accomplish working with blood vessels.
- Predict what would happen if one organ in a body system stopped doing its job.
- Identify one other body system and name an organ that belongs to it.

Organs on a Team
Your body is full of organs, and each one has an important job. Your heart pumps blood, your lungs bring in air, and your stomach breaks down food. But organs do not work alone. When a group of organs team up to do one big job together, we call that a body system. It is like a soccer team, where everyone works together to win.
The Circulatory Team
The circulatory system is a great example of teamwork. The heart and blood vessels are its star players. The heart squeezes and pumps blood out through tubes called blood vessels. Together they carry oxygen and food to every cell in your body. Without blood vessels, the heart's pumping would go nowhere, so they truly need each other.
Worked examples
How do the heart and blood vessels work together?
- The heart squeezes and pumps blood out.
- Blood vessels are tubes that carry the blood.
- Together they deliver oxygen and food to cells.
Answer: The heart pumps and the blood vessels carry, working as one team.
Activity
Sort each organ card into the correct body system bucket on the screen.
Practice
What is a body system in your own words?
Name two organs in the circulatory system.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Organs always work aloneOrgans team up in body systems to do one big job.
- The heart works without blood vesselsThe heart needs blood vessels to carry blood through the body.
Check your understanding
What is a body system?
Which two organs work together as part of the circulatory system?
Layla thinks the heart can deliver oxygen to the whole body all by itself, without any blood vessels. Is she right?
Recap
Organs are body parts with important jobs, and they team up into body systems. The circulatory system uses the heart and blood vessels together to carry oxygen and food to every cell.
