Why the Moon Seems to Change Shape
Lumi glides through a calm night sky beside a glowing round Moon, holding a flashlight that lights up only one side of a beach ball, with the Moon shown moving along its big curved path around Earth and friendly stars sprinkled all around.
- Explain that the Sun lights up only one half of the Moon at a time.
- Describe how the Moon's appearance seems to change as it orbits Earth.
- Name the order of the four main Moon phases: New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter.
- Predict that the full cycle of Moon phases takes about one month.
- Distinguish between the Moon truly changing shape and us seeing different amounts of its lit side.
Key terms
- Phase
- How much lit Moon we see.
- Orbit
- The big circle the Moon travels.
- New Moon
- When we see no lit side.
- Full Moon
- When we see the whole lit side.
Always A Round Ball
The Moon is always a round ball and never really changes its shape. The Sun shines on it and lights up exactly one half, just like a flashlight lighting one side of a beach ball. The other half stays dark. So the Moon does not get bigger or smaller. We only see different amounts of its bright half from down here on Earth.
Moving Around Earth
The Moon travels in a big circle around Earth. As it moves along that path, we see different amounts of the lit half. When we see none of it, that is a New Moon. When we see half, that is a Quarter Moon. When we see all of it, that is a Full Moon. The whole trip takes about one month every time.
Worked examples
We can see the whole lit side of the Moon. Which phase is it?
- The whole lit half is facing us right now.
- Seeing the whole lit half has a special name.
Answer: It is a Full Moon.
Activity
Put these Moon phases in the order they appear during one month, starting with New Moon.
Practice
Explain why the Moon looks different on different nights.
Tell how long the Moon takes to show every phase.
Common mistakes to avoid
- The Moon really changes shapeThe Moon stays round, but we see different amounts of its lit side.
Check your understanding
Why does the Moon look like it changes shape during the month?
How long does it take the Moon to go through all its phases one time?
During a New Moon, why is it hard to see the Moon?
Recap
The Moon is always round, and the Sun lights one half of it. As the Moon orbits Earth in about a month, we see different amounts of its lit side.
Reflect
What shape was the Moon the last time you looked up?
