How Animals Change Through Their Life Cycle
Medi kneels beside a sunny garden pond, holding a magnifying glass over a cluster of frog eggs attached to a lily pad, eyes wide with excitement as a spotted frog leaps onto a nearby rock.
- Identify the three main stages of an animal life cycle: birth, growth, and reproduction.
- Explain what metamorphosis means and give an example of an animal that goes through it.
- Compare the life cycle of a frog to the life cycle of a dog, noting how they are similar and different.
- Predict what stage comes next when given one stage in a life cycle sequence.
Key terms
- Life cycle
- The stages an animal goes through as it lives.
- Metamorphosis
- A big change in body shape as an animal grows.
- Tadpole
- A baby frog that swims and has a tail.
- Offspring
- The baby animals that parents have.
- Reproduction
- When grown animals make babies of their own.
Three Big Stages
Every animal life cycle has three big stages. First is birth, when a new animal hatches from an egg or is born from its mom. Next is growth, when the young animal eats food and gets bigger and stronger. Last is reproduction, when the grown-up animal has babies of its own. Then those babies start the same stages all over again, so the cycle keeps going.
The Amazing Frog Change
A frog goes through a huge change called metamorphosis. It starts as a jelly-like egg in the water. The egg hatches into a tadpole that swims with a tail and breathes with gills. Slowly the tadpole grows legs and becomes a froglet with a tiny shrinking tail. At last the tail is gone and a full adult frog hops onto land. What a big change from a swimming tadpole!
Not Every Animal Changes A Lot
Some animals do not change shape much at all. A puppy looks like a tiny dog when it is born. A kitten looks like a small cat. Human babies look like little people. These animals grow bigger and get stronger, but they do not turn into a totally different shape. Only some animals, like frogs and butterflies, go through metamorphosis.
Worked examples
Put the frog life cycle in order.
- Start with the egg floating in the pond water.
- The egg hatches into a swimming tadpole with a tail.
- The tadpole grows legs and becomes a froglet, then a full adult frog.
Answer: Egg, then tadpole, then froglet, then adult frog.
Does a kitten go through metamorphosis?
- Remember metamorphosis means a big change in body shape.
- A kitten already looks like a little cat when it is born.
- It just grows bigger, it does not change shape.
Answer: No, a kitten does not go through metamorphosis.
Activity
Put the four pictures in the correct order to build a frog's complete life cycle from start to finish.
Practice
Name the three main stages of an animal life cycle.
Tell one way a tadpole is different from an adult frog.
Common mistakes to avoid
- All animals change shape as they grow.Only some animals like frogs and butterflies go through metamorphosis.
- A tadpole is a different kind of animal.A tadpole is a baby frog that will grow into an adult frog.
Check your understanding
A tadpole hatches from an egg, grows legs, loses its tail, and becomes an adult frog. What is the scientific word for this dramatic change in body shape?
Which of the following best describes what makes an animal's life cycle a 'cycle'?
A student says, 'Butterflies and frogs go through metamorphosis, so all animals must change shape completely as they grow.' Is this student correct?
Recap
Every animal goes through a life cycle of birth, growth, and reproduction. Some animals like frogs and butterflies change shape in metamorphosis, while others like dogs and cats just grow bigger.
