Traits You Are Born With Versus Behaviors You Learn
A sunny backyard garden where Lumi, a cheerful glowing guide with bright curious eyes, kneels beside a mother dog and her puppies, pointing excitedly at the puppies' fur colors and floppy ears while a robin nearby watches her chick peck the ground, practicing how to find worms just like its parent.
- Identify at least two traits that organisms inherit from their parents at birth.
- Identify at least two behaviors that organisms gain through experience or practice.
- Compare inherited traits and learned behaviors using real animal and human examples.
- Explain why two siblings can share inherited traits but develop different learned behaviors.
- Predict whether a given trait or behavior is inherited or learned by applying a simple test question.
Key terms
- Inherited trait
- A feature you are born with from parents.
- Learned behavior
- A skill you pick up through practice.
- Genes
- Tiny instructions passed from parents to young.
- Experience
- Things you do and learn over time.
Born With It
Some features are there from the very moment a living thing is born. We call these inherited traits. Puppies are born with floppy ears and spotted fur just like their mom. People are born with their eye color and hair type. No one taught the puppy to grow its fur, and no one taught you your eye color. These features come from your parents through tiny instructions called genes.
Learned By Doing
Other things are not there at birth. A living thing must practice to get good at them. We call these learned behaviors. A robin chick learns where to find worms by trying again and again. You learned to read, ride a bike, or tie your shoes by practicing. A dog learns to sit on command from a person. These skills come from experience, teachers, and lots of trying.
A Simple Test
How can you tell if something is inherited or learned? Use this simple test. Ask yourself, would this be here even if the creature never practiced and was never taught? If the answer is yes, it is most likely inherited, like eye color. If the answer is no, it is most likely learned, like playing the piano. This question helps you sort any trait or behavior.
Worked examples
Is a kitten's orange fur inherited or learned?
- Ask if the fur would be there without practice.
- The kitten is born with orange fur, no practice needed.
- So the orange fur is an inherited trait from the parent.
Answer: The orange fur is an inherited trait.
Is speaking Spanish inherited or learned?
- Ask if a baby could speak Spanish with no teaching.

- So speaking Spanish needs experience and practice.
Answer: Speaking Spanish is a learned behavior.
Activity

Practice
Name one inherited trait and one learned behavior of a dog.
Why can two siblings speak different languages even though they share traits?
Common mistakes to avoid
- All skills are inherited from parents.Skills like reading and biking are learned through practice, not inherited.
- Eye color can change with practice.Eye color is inherited and stays the same no matter what you practice.
Check your understanding

Recap
Inherited traits, like eye color and fur color, are there at birth and come from your parents through genes. Learned behaviors, like reading and biking, are skills you pick up by practicing and from experience.
