What Every Living Thing Needs to Survive
Lumi kneels in a sunlit garden beside a tomato plant, an earthworm in the soil, and a buzzing bee, holding up a watering can and pointing to the bright sun overhead while wearing a green explorer vest.
- Identify the four basic needs that most living things — especially plants and animals — share to stay alive.
- Explain why each basic need — energy, water, air, and a place to live — matters for survival.
- Compare how different living things meet the same basic need in different ways.
- Predict what would happen to a living thing if one of its basic needs was not met.
Key terms
- Basic needs
- Things a living thing must have to live.
- Energy
- The power to grow, move, and live.
- Oxygen
- A gas in the air that living things need.
- Habitat
- A place where a living thing can live.
Energy And Water
Every living thing needs energy to grow, move, and play. Plants get energy from sunlight and use it to make their own food. Animals, including you, get energy by eating food like fruit or a sandwich. Living things also need water. Water helps blood carry food around an animal's body, and it moves goodness up through a plant's stem. Without water, living things dry out and cannot stay alive.
Air And A Place To Live
Most living things need air to live. Animals breathe in a gas called oxygen, even fish, who pull it out of water with their gills. Plants take in a gas called carbon dioxide to help make their food. Living things also need a place to live, called a habitat. A bird needs a branch for its nest, a cactus needs sandy soil, and a fish needs a pond. The home keeps them safe and fed.
All Four Needs Matter
A living thing needs all four basic needs to survive. These are energy, water, air, and a place to live. If even one need is missing, the living thing cannot stay healthy for long. A plant in a dark closet has water and air but no sunlight, so it weakens and dies. This is why we call them basic needs. They are not extra, they are must-haves for every living thing.
Worked examples
What happens to a plant kept in a dark closet?
- A plant needs sunlight to make its energy.
- A dark closet has no sunlight at all.
- Without energy the plant cannot survive, even with water and air.
Answer: The plant weakens and dies because it has no light for energy.
How does a fish meet its need for air?
- All animals need oxygen from the air.
- A fish lives underwater and cannot breathe like we do.
- It uses its gills to pull oxygen right out of the water.
Answer: A fish gets oxygen from the water through its gills.
Activity
Sort each example into the basic need it shows being met: Energy, Water, Air, or Place to Live.
Practice
Name the four basic needs of most living things.
How does a plant get its energy compared to an animal?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Plants do not need air.Plants take in carbon dioxide from the air to make food.
- Rocks have needs too.Rocks are not alive, so they have no basic needs at all.
Check your understanding
A seedling is placed in a dark closet with plenty of water and air. What will most likely happen to it over time?
Which of the following BEST explains why fish are living things even though they live underwater and cannot breathe air like we do?
Which statement best explains why rocks do NOT have basic needs?
Recap
Most living things need four basic things to survive: energy, water, air, and a place to live. If even one of these needs is missing, a living thing cannot stay healthy and alive for very long.
