The Highest Rulebook
Every group needs rules, and a whole country needs them too. The Constitution is the most important rulebook the United States has. It was written in 1787 by leaders called the Framers. It is the highest law in the land. That means no state law, no city rule, and not even the President can go against it. Think of it as the rulebook that beats every other rulebook.
What It Does
The Constitution has two big jobs. First, it sets up the government with three branches: Congress makes laws, the President carries them out, and the Courts decide what laws mean. Three branches stop any one person from grabbing all the power. Second, it tells the government what it cannot do. It cannot take away your free speech or your religion. Those protections live in the Bill of Rights.
