Counting Whole, Half, and Quarter Notes
Melody sits at a sunlit upright piano in a cozy music classroom, tapping the keys with one hand and counting beats aloud on her fingers with the other, while colorful note shapes float on the chalkboard behind her.
- Identify whole, half, and quarter notes by their visual shape on a staff.
- Explain how many beats each note shape receives when counting in groups of four.
- Compare the durations of whole, half, and quarter notes by describing which note is longest and which is shortest.
- Predict how many quarter notes fit inside one whole note.
- Count a short rhythm correctly by tapping the right number of beats for each note in a sequence.
Key terms
- beat

- quarter note
- A note that lasts one beat.
- rhythm
- The pattern of long and short sounds.
What Is a Beat
A beat is one steady count, just like the tick of a clock. When you tap your foot to your favorite song, each tap is one beat. Beats keep going in a steady line, the same speed over and over. In our music today, we count beats in groups of four, like one, two, three, four, then start again. Notes tell us how many of those steady beats to hold each sound. Some sounds are long and some are short, and the note shape gives us the secret clue.
Pizza Notes
Think about a yummy pizza to remember note values! A whole pizza is one complete circle, just like a whole note that lasts all four beats. If you slice the pizza into two big pieces, those are like half notes that each last two beats. If you slice it into four pieces, those are like quarter notes that each last one beat. The more pieces you cut, the shorter each piece is. Notes work the same way: a whole note is the longest, and a quarter note is the shortest.
Spot the Shape
You can tell notes apart by looking at their shapes. A whole note is a hollow oval with no stem, like an empty egg lying down. A half note is also a hollow oval, but it has a stem, like a little stick poking up. A quarter note is filled in solid black and also has a stem. So check two things: is the oval hollow or filled, and does it have a stem? A hollow oval with no stem is a whole note. A hollow oval with a stem is a half note. A filled oval with a stem is a quarter note.
Worked examples
How many beats does a half note get?
- Remember the chant: half gets two.
- A half note is held for two steady beats.
- Count one, two while you hold the sound.
Answer: 2 beats.
How many quarter notes fill one whole note?
- A whole note lasts four beats.
- Each quarter note lasts one beat.
- Four ones add up to four, so you need four quarter notes.
Answer: 4 quarter notes.
Activity
Drag each note shape into the row that shows how many beats it lasts
Practice
Clap one whole note, then clap four quarter notes in a row.
Count the beats for a half note and a quarter note together.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A quarter note lasts longer.A quarter note is the shortest here, lasting only one beat.
- Two quarter notes equal a whole note. You need four quarter notes to equal one whole note.
Check your understanding
A quarter note lasts for how many beats?
How many quarter notes does it take to fill the same space as ONE whole note?
Melody plays a half note. Which description matches what she plays?
Melody taps this short rhythm: whole note, then two quarter notes. How many beats does she tap in total?
Recap
Notes tell us how long to hold a sound in steady beats. A whole note gets four beats, a half note gets two beats, and a quarter note gets one beat. Look at the shape and stem to know which note you see.
