Same for Everyone vs. What Each Person Needs
Philo stands in a sunny school cafeteria beside a long lunch table, looking thoughtful as three students — one very tall, one very short, and one using a wheelchair — each struggle to reach a shelf at a different height. Philo sets down the stack of identical sandwich boxes and starts paying close attention to what each student actually needs.
- Explain the difference between equality (giving everyone the same thing) and equity (giving each person what they need).
- Identify at least one real-life situation where equal treatment is fair and one where equitable treatment is fairer.
- Compare two solutions to a problem and decide which one better helps everyone participate.
- Predict what might go wrong when the same solution is given to people with different needs.
Key terms
- Equality
- Giving every person the exact same thing.
- Equity
- Giving each person what they truly need.
- Need
- Something a person must have to take part.
- Fairness
- Making sure everyone gets a real chance.
When Same Is Fair
Sometimes giving everyone the exact same thing really is fair. If every child at a party gets one slice of cake, that feels just right because everyone wanted the same thing. Equality works best when people start in the same place and need the same help. Then the same step stool or the same number of pencils helps everyone equally well.
When People Need Different Things
But people are not always the same. One friend may be tall and one may be short. One may use a wheelchair and need a ramp. If we give everyone the identical stool, some still cannot reach. Equity asks, "What does THIS person need?" and gives each one the right help. That way everyone can finally reach the same shelf together.
Worked examples
Help two friends reach a high sink.
- Notice their needs: one friend is tall and reaches fine, one is short and cannot.
- Give the right help to each: no stool for the tall friend, a taller stool for the short friend.
Answer: Now both friends can reach the sink. That is equity, because each one got what they needed to reach the same goal.
Activity
Drag each situation into the box where it belongs: Equal Fairness or Equitable Fairness.
Practice
Name a time when giving the same thing was fair.
Name a time when people needed different things to join in.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Fair always means the exact same.Sometimes fair means giving each person what they need instead.

Recap
Equality means giving everyone the same thing, and equity means giving each person what they need. Both are kinds of fairness. We ask what this person actually needs so everyone can take part together.
