Use Compass Directions and Grids to Find Any Place on a Map
Sage stands at a wide wooden map table inside a cozy explorer's library, pointing to a colorful map of a small town with a compass rose painted in gold in the corner, adjusting a magnifying glass over a letter-number grid as morning light streams through the window.
- Identify the four cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) on a compass rose.
- Explain how a letter-number grid divides a map into named squares.
- Locate a specific place on a map by combining a grid letter and number.
- Describe the location of one place relative to another using cardinal directions.
- Compare two locations on a grid to determine which is farther North or farther East.
Key terms
- Cardinal directions
- The four main directions: North, South, East, and West.
- Compass rose
- A star-shaped map symbol that points to the four directions.
- Map grid
- Lines that split a map into named squares.
- Grid square
- One box on the grid named by a letter and a number.
The Compass Rose
The compass rose is a little star on a map. It shows you which way is North, South, East, and West. If you face North, then East is on your right, West is on your left, and South is behind you. Every map uses these same four directions, so you can read any map in the world.
Finding a Grid Square
A grid splits the map into squares like a checkerboard. The columns have letters and the rows have numbers. To find square C-2, slide your finger across to column C, then slide it down to row 2. The square where they meet is C-2. Now you have found the exact spot, just like a tiny address.
Worked examples
Find the school in square B-2.
- Slide your finger to column B.
- Now slide your finger down to row 2.
- Stop at the square where B and 2 meet.
Answer: The school sits in square B-2.
Which way is the park from the school?
- The school is in B-2.
- The park is in B-1, which is one row up.
- Smaller row numbers are toward the North.
Answer: The park is North of the school.
Activity
Drag each building to the correct square on the town map using the grid clues given
Practice
Name the grid square in column A and row 3.
If you face North, which direction is on your right?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Up always means North on every map.You must check the compass rose, because some maps point a different way.
- You say the row number before the column letter. You say the column letter first, then the row number, like B-3.
Check your understanding
Look at a map with columns A, B, C and rows 1, 2, 3. A student wants to find the square in column B, row 3. Which grid square should she look at?
On a map, the hospital is in square C-4. The school is in square C-1. Which direction would you travel to go from the school to the hospital?
Which tool on a map tells you which way is North?
Recap
Today we learned the compass rose shows North, South, East, and West. The grid splits a map into squares named with a letter and a number. Together they help you find any place on a map.
